Dr. Surman grew up in the suburbs of Washington D.C. in a home full of pets, and for as long as she can remember, she’s been passionate about caring for animals.
As a high schooler, Dr. Surman interned with veterinary clinics in order to gain early experience in veterinary medicine. Next, she earned a B.S. in Animal Science from the University of Maryland. After completing her undergraduate work, she moved to Baldwin, her husband’s home town, where she spent a year falling in love with the city of Pittsburgh.
She continued her studies and finally realized her childhood dream, earning her VMD from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Surman then worked in a small animal practice in the D.C. area before moving back to Pittsburgh to join Always Compassionate Veterinary Care.
Dr. Surman now lives in Pittsburgh with her husband Aaron, two small children, and three mixed breed dogs. (She is working on convincing her husband to let her bring home a kitty or two.) In her spare time, Dr. Surman enjoys spending time with her family, traveling to warm beaches, doing yoga, being outdoors, and rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Dr. Surman is a member in good standing with the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association (PVMA), and the Western Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association (WPVMA).
